Wish you could just sit at a piano and just make it SING?  without having to learn chords, dots on a page, theory, or even note names?

Do you love music?  Deep down?!

Do you ever think, "it would be SO GREAT to be able to DO that, to really PLAY something that could make you feel that good??!!

And then have you tried to learn to play, only to find yourself staring at dots on a page, or being told you have to learn some basic chords first, and then these, and then there's THESE...

So when you read those notes or played those chords, did it sound musical to you? Or did it sound like someone trying to do something that sounds like music?

Maybe you’ve checked out some of the whiz-bang, “Easy piano,” fancy, colorful piano apps. You watch for the flashing, colored note, push it down when it lights up and, "Voilà!" you're playing music!

How satisfying is that, really?

If your momentary dissatisfaction was all there was to it, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

But what if the underlying message is more insidious?

What if your real takeaway from these experiences is that you’re “not really a musician,” that you’re “not good enough,” or more to the

point that "you have to wait until 'some other time' before you'll have anything worthy and valuable to offer of your own?"

That can lead to broader and deeper problems down the road. And many of them extend well beyond your relationship to playing music.

The problem with most methods of piano instruction (and most music instruction in general) is that it is based on the assumption that students should learn to play other people’s music first, and then their own music later.

Usually MUCH later!

The message here is that there are people “out there” who are musical, talented, creative, artistic, smart, etc., and that if you want to embody any of those traits, we need to be like them.  Even if that takes years!

In other words, what we want is "out there" and separate from where we are right now.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with learning from others. But when that happens at the expense of learning more deeply who we are, that’s worth paying attention to.

What if you could learn to navigate the piano well enough to begin improvising your own music, coming from your own creativity, in any key, from Day 1 onward?

That’s what this class is about.

The main challenge up front with playing piano is knowing which notes to play in any key. Without this, you end up playing too many cranky notes, you get discouraged and you end up quitting.

This one-hour mini-course presents a unique one-of-a-kind approach to knowing which notes to play in all 12 keys. With this in mind, you can start to express yourself authentically and musically from Day 1. From the start, the piano becomes an ally and you begin to nurture a friendly, creative relationship with it, with music, and with yourself.

Here’s what's included with this class

This will be a 1-hour live online group class.

The time to be determined soon and the class will be recorded and made available to all registrants.

When you sign up, I’ll put you on a list to get emails about the class with the link and any other info to help you prepare.

If you have any questions, please reply to the email that sent you to this page.

1-hour online  group class

This is great because it won’t take long and you’ll learn something that will immediately change your perspective on the piano from now on.  And you'll be learning with a group of others who may become musical buddies going forward. :-)

PDF resource w/ complete instructions

You don’t have to focus on taking notes, all the important info is easily available.

Maps of all 12 keys

There are graphics of all the 12 keys in the back of the reference PDF, so you can always go back to make sure you understand the system as intended.

Searchable video recording

This is great because you can not only watch the class again, but you can search the transcript for particular words and phrases and go right to that point in the video.

No more worrying about "sour" notes

You'll know which notes to play in any key, so while not everything you play will be as you expect, it will at least have a musical resonance.

Pick any key and start playing!

From Day 1, you can pick a key, figure out the notes to play, and start exploring

"See" the notes to play in any key

You learn a way to "see" the notes in the key as a whole, so that your mind can quickly know, up and down the keyboard, which notes to play.  This frees up your attention to listen more to the sounds than worrying about whether you are playing the "right" notes.

Explore the piano confidently

Enjoy playing the piano knowing that whatever you play will sound at least okay.  You can let go of worrying about playing something that will spoil the experience. You'll be spending more of your attention on things to play rather than worrying about bad outcomes.

What will we cover in 12 Keys with Ease?

1

Part 1:  The Fields of the Keyboard

The basic foundation of the 12 Keys with Ease approach.  You learn a new way to "see" the piano keyboard which opens up this entirely new way to play.

2

Part 2: 4 Types of Keys

There are four "types" of keys to distinguish among.  When you can "see" these types of keys differently, this is the beginning of a whole new way of relating to the piano.

3

Part 3: How Each Type Behaves

You'll learn how each type of key functions, operates, behaves, looks.  You'll see how this manifests with each of the keys within the key "types."  You'll be amazed at how easy this is, and how it changes everything for your relationship to the piano.

4

Part 4: Putting It All Together

Now that you have this new way of seeing the piano keyboard, then a world of possibilities presents itself.  You are at a blank canvas now and it can be intimidating.  You'll learn a few ideas to help to get going with your creative self and the piano.  You will leave feeling inspired and excited to sit and start exploring the amazing instrument that a piano is, and the amazing creator that you are!!

I'm Daniel Barber.

I started on piano at 4, early enough to prep for a thoroughly musical life, but in my teens I got inspired with bringing more healing justice and love into the world.

Throughout 20 years in social work, quantitative social systems research, computing tech support, video production for nonprofits, and political activism, I’ve collaborated with lots of good people tackling lots of good questions.

One that's always driven me is “How do we get from where we are now to where we most want to be?”

        ----------------------------------

For 20 years, I didn’t play much music. Sometimes I'd go to the piano and try to teach myself improvisation, but I kept hitting walls and didn’t know where to turn for help, so I kept setting it aside.

As more years ticked away, I felt more sadness at missing out on the fun and enjoyment of learning, playing, and growing musically.

In 2001, I came back to the piano in earnest and started playing professionally.  I went full-time with music in 2006 and learned a lot about adult learning and about improv (musical and theatrical).

Ironically, in the process of exploring myself more deeply through musical expression, I've come to see that not only is music improv fun and engaging, it offers unique insights into how to get from where we are now to where we most want to be.

And that's worth learning!!

A 1-hour class that can completely alter your relationship to the piano (and to yourself)

The most essential skill anyone could possibly learn is to navigate the unknown with mastery.

12 Keys with Ease opens the door to a piano approach that emphasizes creativity, self-awareness and authenticity.

The typical approach to piano involves teaching other people's music.

That approach can be arbitrary, awkward, complicated, time-consuming, boring, and discouraging.

Most people aren't looking for music careers, but would love to just sit and be able to play something engaging and enjoyable.

12 Keys with Ease makes the entire piano keyboard immediately accessible, and you can go ahead and begin exploring your own creativity through sound and music.

This approach is entirely one-of-a-kind, and may well catch on more widely in the piano pedagogy world going forward.

This is an early opportunity to take advantage of this approach in its relatively infancy. (I began teaching this approach in 2014.  I initially called it Playing the Fields.)

What past students have to say about 12 Keys with Ease

This would spare me having to think about theory

I was working on some original music last night, and the thought occurred: " I could use the "3 sharps" key layout to explore some ideas to create a new section of the song. This would spare me having to think about theory, and will probably result in some ideas I might not have found previously.

Surprisingly informative and approachable new way

It was surprisingly informative. I do play the piano some but this lesson made some of the more complex keys less intimidating. It was a new way of looking at the various keys which simplified it and made it more approachable.

I've seen just about every method there is...

I was a full-time piano teacher for 5 years, I've seen just about every method there is, and I've never seen anything like this. Did no one genuinely figure this out before Daniel? Perhaps we should call this the Barber method...

Now I do it for just 10 mins a day. It starts messy, then it gets musical, then it gets deep. Often I cry. And music starts to flow through me again. Like it used to. I'm not making mistakes any more. I'm staying effortlessly within key. It's like he's helped me get back into the heart of music. Thank you Daniel. Thank you thank you thank you.

Hidden value

Yes! I am much more aware that I have or should have a relationship to my piano, an old friend, that is more than just sitting down and immediately playing/duplicating other peoples' music. There is a reciprocal listening for and feeling of what may need to be "said" at the keyboard on any given "conversation."

I believe I have transferred that awareness of listening and feeling in dealing with others. Relationships are not always what you expect up front. They can have hidden value in being patient and seeing what unfolds.

Excellent for beginners or experienced pianists

It's fun to sit down and go from key to key using what I learned in the lesson.

It is an excellent lesson for others whether they are beginners or experienced pianists.

Surprise your friends and family

I feel like it's pretty effortless to make some really nice sounds with your system. In fact, I sat down last night and started playing some things that I like. My daughter came into the room and gave me a hug. I asked why and she said she heard me playing and thought it was my wife (who can play the piano very well). When she saw it was me, she was moved to give me a hug.

Improved my openness to others

This course is based on the individual slowing down and listening for the music that lies within us. That calming and centering can truly be a mindset that helps in other facets of my life.

Daniel shows a sincere interest in me as a student and as a person. His methods of listening, breathing and centering can certainly help if applied to dealing with others. I think that lesson is one I have taken forward and has improved my openness to others.

Something I only dreamed of

Do it! Absolutely embrace the fact that yes, after a mere hour, you will be able to improv in 12 keys. It's something I only ever dreamed of doing, and now when I sit at the piano, I'm able to dig right in--with gusto!

When I sit down at the piano now, it's no longer this strange mystery. It has form and structure, and I know it.

How easy it was, and how well I could remember it days, weeks and months later.

Almost shocked at what I was able to accomplish

I have zero desire (or time or patience) to learn to read music or learn to play piano in a traditional way. These tools gave me the ability to 'play' piano in about an hour... Slow and steady. But what came out of the piano sounded really nice to my ears (and family's ears as well)

Just do it. If you've ever wanted to play piano these 60 minutes might be your shortcut ticket to making lovely sounds come from a piano! I practiced an hour last night and was almost shocked at what I was able to accomplish. First practice sesssion

Freedom!

It’s opened up a "whole nother" world for me. It’s like my brain cells are saying, “hey cell mates, we just got the key to unlock the iron door, so let’s bust outta here and head for the 'fields.' Freedom!”

… I don't even have to know what key I’m playing in. I can just put all that aside.

In the moment

It is like a meditation where you sit to clear your mind and stop it from thinking or judging or analyzing and you just let it happen. In the moment. And whatever happens, it just is. It just comes out. And it’s okay. Truly. I’m not kidding. Genius.

Musical intuition revved!

I've loved composing for guitar all my life, and as anyone knows, the guitar is not as friendly when it comes to memorizing where all the notes are. The thought of learning a whole new instrument was daunting to me, but to my surprise, since I've learned to improv in 12 keys, the guitar is easier for me now as well. I can really hear music more adeptly, and my musical intuition has never been more revved!

Interesting new way

Very interesting new way to think about playing in different keys.

Amazingly easy!

I was amazed at how easy the approach was to apply. I saw 'possibilities' and felt great joy in that! Your enthusiasm is contagious and just experiencing that was a personal growth opportunity for me.

Excited about sitting at the piano

Oh happy day, "and thank you, Daniel."

Yours is an amazing concept that is leading to a more simplified way to understand which notes when played together or in sequence make harmony and which to leave out till another time.

Now I'm excited about sitting down at the piano rather than dreading it.

Whoopee and Oh Yeah!

[Recommend?] 100%. Wonderful time spent with Daniel

[Would you recommend this approach?] 100%. Wonderful time spent with Daniel understanding this way to learn improvisational piano!

I suppose the first word that comes to mind is clever and visual. I learn best with visual cues and (this) was a really easy way for my mind to wrap around the concepts.

So simple, and so genius.

So he has this crazy method. Omg. It is so simple. And so genius. And has transformed my relationship with piano improv.

Fascinating, just fascinating

This new way of looking at patterns on the keyboard has caused a major brain shift for me. I keep looking at the patterns and just can’t believe it. Makes total sense.

I was so excited and energized after our lesson last week that my mind just would not stop. I’ve been playing around with it and listening to the sounds in a way that I never listened before, and I have a basic structure, or map, as a way to organize it. Fascinating, just fascinating. And yet really so simple. How did you think of this?

Simple method, immediate results

I have had fits and starts all of my adult life taking traditional piano lessons and find myself frustrated at the lack of progress. Daniel's method is simple in its logic and you truly can make some pleasing music after your first lesson.

Lifelong dream might be possible after all!

A light bulb went off in my brain, tears came to my eyes, and I clapped for joy to realize that a life-long dream of playing the piano without being tied to the printed page of music just might be possible after all, despite years of lessons!!!

It's easier than you think / rewarding experience practically guaranteed!

Good pace of instruction, great concept, fun to apply.

Using this method, I felt less intimidated of keys with lots of sharps and flats than I would have using traditional theory and scales.

It's easier than you think, and the likelihood of this being a rewarding experience is practically guaranteed!

Common questions

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ANY MUSICAL ABILITY?

I can appreciate why you may have that belief, and why that can feel discouraging.

12 Keys with Ease doesn't assume or require any musical ability, background or training.

The underlying philosophy holds that you DO have ability, although so far it may be untapped.

12 Keys with Ease makes it possible to begin exploring your connection to sound and music in a way that is easy, natural, and accessible.

WILL THIS HELP IF I HAVE EXTENSIVE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE BUT I CAN'T IMPROVISE?

Yes, it can help you a lot.

See Karen Gaughan's testimonial about her experience with this method.  Karen was a piano performance major in college, described herself as not being comfortable improvising, and she found this approach to be liberating for her.

This perspective can help you "see" the piano keyboard in an entirely new way.  This can open the door to new creative possibilities.

DO I HAVE TO DO THIS SOUND YOURSELF COurse ON PIANO OR COULD DO IT WITH ANOTHER INSTRUMENT (EG. GUITAR, DRUMS, ETC.)?

The 12 Keys with Ease technique only works on piano.

Our more intensive program, SoundYourSelf, can work with other instruments, but it is designed for piano in part because of the way that the 12 Keys with Ease technique opens the piano keyboard to a much more intuitive orientation.

IS THIS PROCESS GUARANTEED TO WORK FOR ME?

We guarantee that you can learn this 12 Keys with Ease approach, especially if you follow the class instructions and assignments for two weeks.

It is not a complicated technique, but it may take a few days to sink in, since it is pretty different from what you may be used to on piano.

If you find yourself having trouble "getting it," please give us a call to see if we can help.  If you find that after 14 days it's just not working for you, let us know and you'll receive a full refund.

what if i don't have a piano/keyboard?

I'm happy to help you find a keyboard that will work for this process.  I have some resources I've put together that lay out the important minimum characteristics and features of a piano / keyboard that will lead to a good experience for you.

It's all about connecting you with an instrument that will in turn help you connect with your inspiration.

what if i don't have a musical bone in my body?

Oh my... I'm sorry you feel that way, and I won't spend much trying to convince you here.

But the 12 Keys with Ease technique does NOT assume or require you to have any musical bones anywhere.

It is simply a different way of "seeing" the keys on the keyboard so that you can easily figure out which 7 notes to play in any key.

Once you know this, you can begin to play and experiment and explore to see if anything in you including your bones, begin to resonate.

And for what it's worth, I'll just say that, from my perspective, the idea that you aren't musical doesn't come from the deepest truth of who you are.

I encourage you to check out the 12 Keys with Ease, and to consider looking further into the SoundYourSelf approach to sound improvisation.  I think it could make a big difference for you. :-)
